![]() "So we found this beat-up old plantation and dumped into it every penny of our life savings and all the borrowed money we could find. Mireille and I understood that the things we enjoyed most were people, dining and being responsible - in the most compelling sense of the word - for ourselves. The 45-year-old Sheehan says, "I hit 'mid-life crisis' and realized that I didn't want to be a middle-management success story. Today's owners are an American-born Irishman from New York, Bill Sheehan, and his French-Italian wife, Mireille. And the kitchen turns out a flawless and original vision of dining. In fact, the inn is smack in the middle of the Green Springs National Historic District (designated by the National Park Service), a bucolic world of stately homes, lush pastures and meandering streams with a serenity too often missing from modern life.īut while Prospect Hill may evoke vivid thoughts of the past, it is in reality a modern, if modest, inn of comfort and charm for the 20th-century visitor. Or you can just relax in a hammock and enjoy the haven that is Prospect Hill. Skiing, horseback riding, golf, good hiking and camping facilities abound in the area. Richmond is 50 miles to the east, the Monticello and Ashlawn historic homes a short drive to the west and Appomattox 80 miles to the south. Prospect Hill still is a country inn today, a 40-acre retreat 30 miles east of Charlottesville. But after the Civil War, the slaves scattered, Prospect Hill broke up into hundreds of smaller farms and homesteads and the once wealthy owners began taking boarders in the 1880s. In fact, the place dates from 1732 and once boasted 1,576 acres of prime land it was a prosperous wheat plantation. Driving up a quarter-mile roadway with stately boxwood hedges marching along the gravel path, you find nestled in an English tree garden of rare magnolias, tall tulip poplars and giant beech trees a rambling yellow manor house from Scarlett O'Hara's dreams. The scenery alone was breathtaking and we plan to book with them again when it's nice out so we can enjoy the 80 acres the Plantation sits on.Trevilians, Virginia - it's a scene straight out of the Old South. The entire experience was amazing!!! The officiant did a beautiful job and was extremely pleasant, Suzanne not only took pictures but also took a video of our vows, champagne and the cake was delicious, and dinner was to die for!!!! Our room was very nice and cozy!!! We had a fire place and since it was cold we put it to good use! A wonderful breakfast was included in our stay the next morning! I would highly recommend this Bed and Breakfast to anyone that enjoys a quiet stay. We booked the elopement package on a Thursday and also booked the Robinson Room for one night. I asked for a nonreligious ceremony and booked the elopement package which included the officiant, bridal bouquet, grooms boutineer, a small wedding cake, champagne, a few pictures taken by Suzanne which she gave us on CD, and dinner. The innkeeper Suzanne and I emailed back and forth for a couple of months before I decided that this would be the best place for us. The one place that always stuck out to me was a bed and breakfast 4 hours away from NC called the Inn at Meander Plantation. I looked online for elopement packages near my area. My husband joined the Navy this year and while he was at bootcamp and "A" school in Illinois I was left to plan a wedding in NC. I think that we got a very small glimpse of southern life at the time of the Revolution. We roamed Meander's grounds, hiked to the river and visited the horses. Suzanne and Suzie were helpful and congenial hosts, patient with our questions and our two silly dogs. ![]() Starched white table cloths, good bed linens and new, comfortable seating provide a kind of opulence in the old home. ![]() The bed was great, the fireplaces kept us cozy and warm. In spite of its age and its quirks, Meander is very comfortable and welcoming. The occasional cracks in the walls and sloping floors demonstrate that these beautiful buildings have been part of this historic community for well over 200 years. ![]() Meander Plantation is the real is very old. George Washington (and his troops) really did sleep here. As you come up the long driveway to this mansion on a hill, it fells like you are going back in time to an earlier America, to be part of the history that is so present in this part of Virginia. My husband and I (together with our two Golden Retrievers) spent four nights in the Summer Kitchen at Meander Plantation as part of our trip to the Charlottesville area. ![]()
